Biographical Statement:

Rex Lingwood is a sculptor working in a variety of media whose work combines the unique physical and psychological properties of his materials, with allusions to specific images with varying degrees of directness. He is best known for his innovative use of leather exploring a variety of heat hardening processes ,which take the ancient process of cuir bouilli (now lost ) as a point of departure. Both his work and his research have contributed to our understanding of this process and to the debate surrounding its nature and possible uses. He has a long standing interest in functional objects as both subjects for sculpture and for their utility.

He has exhibited widely in Canada and internationally including USA, Great Britain, Germany, France , the Netherlands , Australia New Zealand and Trinidad. In 1995 the Deutsches Ledermuseum mounted a major exhibition of his work, 'Rex Lingwood: Boxes and Bowls? Experiments with Functional Subjects', which was accompanied by an extensive catalogue. The exhibition tour Germany, France, the Netherlands, and England finishing in Canada in 1997.

He has also lectured and taught workshops both in Canada and internationally including the Royal College of Art London, the Sculpture Department City University of New York, the School of Art, National University of Australia in Canberra as well as numerous other venues.

His work is in public and private collections in Canada, the United States, Australia NewZealand, Britain, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. His work has appeared more than 60 times in more than 45 publications in Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, England, France, Holland, Spain and Germany since 1971. He is the author of two books and numerous articles.

He is one of the founders of CAFKA (Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener + Area) and has held a number of positions within the organization including chair of the board from 2005 to 2009. He was also a long time member of the selection and installation committees. In the latter role he has (and continues to) project managed and help the artists build many of CAFKA's most challenging projects.
